What Colors Mean in Dreams

[Return to the main Dreams page] [Return to the Glade] [Return to the Front Porch]

You might have heard it said that "it's rare to dream in color" or "if you dream in color that means the dream is going to come true." These things are oversimplifications! All dreams are true in one way or another, and it is not "rare" to dream in color, just that we don't construct or remember color in dreams if it is not important to the meaning of the dream. If a dream symbol is in color, and if we remember that color on waking, that means that our Dreamweaver was trying to tell us some additional information about the object we saw in the dream.

I have heard that when we achieve a certain level of integration or spiritual growth, we stop dreaming in concrete symbols altogether and dream purely in colors, lights and shapes. I haven't reached this level myself, yet, though!

Red is your passion, blood, fire, wine. It represents the more passionate emotions (such as anger) as well as sexual passion.

Purple represents transformation, especially spiritual transformation.

Blue (light) is the intellect and spiritual sublimity and in general any of the cooler, more aloof aspects of being human.

Blue (dark) however, represents looking inward and hearkening to your intuition and "baser" wisdom.

Green is the color of youthful concerns, sensation, growth, renewal, early learning.

Yellow is the color of intuition and of incoming spiritual enlightenment.

Orange represents change and of taking one's power in one's own hands.

Pink represents the more tender emotions and heart-bonds, sometimes in their more niave and less mature forms, but can also represent pure intentions and the abilitiy to love selflessly.

Black is not a "bad" color. It can represent the mourning and turning-inward associated with death, change, and other kinds of loss, but it is also the place in our subconscious where we can go to lie quietly and heal, gestate our dreams, and obtain new reserves of strength.

White represents intellect and wisdom, and if it tends to a silvery shade, divinity. It can also sometimes represent innocence and purity.

Brown represents earthly concerns, sensuality, and personal wealth.

Gold is sort of like yellow on steriods. It is divine inspiration, enlightenment, and the fire of life.

Muddy Colors of any of the shades above represent depression due to a repression of the part of yourself concerned with that particular color, or deception.
