The Vehicles of Dreams

[Return to the main Dreams page] [Return to the Glade] [Return to the Front Porch]

Any types of vehicles in dreams generally represent the motive force we use to get through life, but the type of vehicle can tell you a lot, too.

Cars are pretty basic and generic; the main thing you need to pay attention to is: Who is driving? If you are in a car with someone in a dream, the person who is driving is not only in control of the relationship, but is likely in control of your life, too. Let's hope it's you! The color of the car may be significant, too.

Planes as dream vehicles represent the desire to fly above the normal need to travel over the ground and adhere to the "one step at a time" rules. So now you know what plane crashes mean! They mean this hasn't worked, and you are going to have to dig in to reality after all.

Trains do represent vigor and vitality and passion, but they are not only about sex, they are about going ahead through life with the above qualities. Missing the train means fear of missing an opportunity to do just this (or it could actually mean fear of taking an opportunity!) and trying to get off a train means that you will be disappointed with the outcome (destination) of a choice you have gone ahead with. All the standard metaphors also apply, such as getting derailed and getting back in the right track!

Buses represent conformity, trying to get through life by being like everyone tells you you should be. Dreams of busses are often dreams of having got on the wrong bus, that is, of living someone else's life and not your own. Missing a bus is indicative of not being able to fit in with the norm.

Boats sail over life and over the subconscious. The trip may be smooth or stormy, and are often accompanied by fear of losing sight of the shore, that is, fear of venturing to new horizons and giving up the security of land. Being shipwrecked, whether or not you are eaten by a whale, is a sign of the old way of life coming to an end and of being reborn.

Your own two feet are also a legitimate way to get through life, dreams of walking steadily along mean that you are making your way on your own, using your own powers, but sometimes you might still be open to accepting a lift in a passing vehicle or obtaining a horse to help you on your journey.
